Artist's Comments

when someone asked me if i would like to accompany them on a trip to pick something up from Penrith this weekend i jumped at the chance to go with them!

( penrith = lake district = very popular photographers destination! )

i only had like, 2 hours before we had to head home but in that i jumped the soonest bus out to Pooley Bridge and had about half an hour shooting the lake at the eastern point of Ullswater.

...sadly i was not to be blessed with any interesting lighting or weather conditions, in fact it was just constant grey drizzle.. so i had to try hard with the basics, composition and technical accuracy, to get anything half decent did i manage?

i metered off the background so the tree in the foreground has to be adjusted in PS via levels to stop its being just a silhuette, i think i got it about right...

i also really wanted to try and get the whole image as sharp as possible so i put the aperture up to 22 which slowed the shutter speed down to 1"3 seconds causing the blur in the water as the rain hit off the surface of the lake.

maybe this won't be very popular because its not, well, its not exactly a very pretty landscape. i could have added warm tones, boosted those red leaves, but then it wouldn't have been November would it? ;)

im also going to enter this in *Solkku's Gloomy Nature competition , as drizzle, dead leaves, bare trees and an empty lake seem pretty darn gloomy to me...
i doubt it will even come close to winning but you should definatly check the competition out! it looks like alot of fun :)

Ullswater. Canon 350d. 18mm lens. 1"3 secs @ 22.

as part of my challenge to try and capture the landscape month by month, december next i guess... wish me luck!!

Great Shot of a stunning part of the world LT, the Lake district is amazing, here where I live in Sydney, every street in my suburb has the name of a place in the lakes. Love the shot, the grey sky is gorgeous.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.

Oh, wouldn't it be great if I was crazy? Then the world would be okay.

this is absolutely gorgeous, i personally think it is a very pretty landscape, the colours are amazing, they have great tones, this looks almost unreal, like a vector or 3D rendering

I think you got a really nice shot. Some shots are meant to be moody and it looks like it was a perfect day to concentrate on texture, which you've done here marvelously! My only gripe is that it's got a bit of noise to it but that happens with longish exposures and low light conditions. Well done! You've got a talent for seeing an image. :)

Sweetie, you are a fantastic photographer, this is a beautiful picture! I haven't been to the Lake District, in fact the farthest I've ever ventured out of Bedfordshire is London lol. But you have captured the true beauty that is Britain's November

Landscapes don't need to be beautiful, sunny, full of clowers to be a powerful image. I love this one. The tones, the tree in the front, the rocks... For me it looks like a magical place :)
