Castle Kilchurn on the banks of Loch Awe, the site of many battles in Scottish history. :spyedvsjark:
The McGregors were the dominant clan in the Loch Awe area until being eclipsed by the Campbells who built Castle Kilchurn in 1450.
The Castle was held by the Campbells for 400 years and became a government stronghold in Jacobean times, but with the pacification of the Highland Clans and the dispersal of the McGregors, the Castle outlived its usefulness.
The Castle was abandoned completely at the end of the 18th Century and then had the misfortune to be burnt out after a "lightning strike" Most likely a stray McGregor...


This was quite a difficult scene to shoot because of the contrast in the scene, but I found shooting at 1/60 second, with a Cokin ND4 filter allowed me to hold both details in the sky and the land. And so, because I get this a lot, this is not a HDR, this is one exposure, not several blended. The photoshop work I have done to this photo is a change in levels to give the scene a bit of a contrast boost. :nod:


Taken the day before Far Away Castle, as you can see quite different weather!

Magnificently forbidding edifice against a suitably brooding sky. It looks like the scene of many a dark deed, which I imagine is so given the reputation of thise colaberating Campbells.
